Liquid crystal cell

A liquid crystal cell is considered which has two support plates forming a chamber with an edge seal, liquid crystal material of the chamber and spacers between the two support plates. The support plates are pressed onto the spacers by an underpressure in the chamber. In order to be able to compensate volumetric changes in the liquid crystal material which occur with temperature, the chamber has a region without spacers which is situated outside the display regions of the cell and in which the cell can breathe.
