PURPOSE:To improve cell performance and increase cell life by embedding fine pipes which supply electrolyte in the lower part within a fuel electrode with ribs, and supplying as occasion arises electrolyte flowing in the fine pipes to an electrolyte holding matrix layer through the porous part and a catalyst layer. CONSTITUTION:Electrolyte is supplied as occasion arises from the outside to fine pipes comprising, for example, Teflon embedded in a porous part with ribs of a fuel electrode 8. The electrolyte penetrates by capillary action to the porous part with ribs through pin holes 10 installed in one side of the Teflon pipes, and is supplied to an electrolyte holding matrix layer 4 through a catalyst layer. During cell operation, ionic resistance of a cell is measured with a milliohm meter to monitor the electrolyte amount held in the matrix, and electrolyte is supplied as occasion arises from an electrolyte storage tank which is connected to the fine pipes and placed outside a manifold so that ionic resistance is always kept in the same value as a new cell. |
