<p>Esters of (R-S) 2-(4-chlorophenyl) 3-methyl butyric acid of formula (I), in which R is 3,7-dimethyl 2,6-octadien-1-yl, are made by (a) alkylating 4-chlorophenyl acetonitrile with isopropyl bromide in presence of aq. NaOH, xylene and tetrabutyl ammonium bromide to give a cpd. of formula (II); (b) hydrolysing with aq. mineral acid to give a cpd. of formula (III); (c) heating with thionyl chloride at between ambient temp. and 80 deg.C to obtain a cpd. of formula (IV); and (d) reacting with 3,7-dimethyl 2,6-octadien-1-ol.</p> |
