Apparatus for desalting water by electrodialysis

A vessel is provided which is composed of two circular cylindrical tanks and two or more flange inlets radial to both tanks. In the radial direction, in one tank, a circular cylindrical anode chamber, a hollow cylindrical cation resin chamber and a hollow cylindrical brine part-chamber follow each other and in the other tank a circular cylindrical cathode chamber, a hollow cylindrical anion resin chamber and a hollow cylindrical brine part-chamber follow each other. The brine chamber is completed by the inner space of the flange inlets. The division of the space is carried out respectively by a cation-permeable or an anion-permeable membrane. The apparatus thus receives a structural shape which can be cheaply manufactured for a high efficiency in the treatment of aqueous liquids, which is easy to transport, occupies a relatively small floor area, is not readily susceptible to faults and is simple to maintain. Despite all this, to remove deposits inhibiting throughflow and to homogenise the two successive ion exchange beds in the cation resin chamber and the anion resin chamber, one backwash chamber each located above the level of the upper flange inlet in the upright operating position of the vessel can be connected.
