PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance which is synthetic intermediate of a compound useful as a remedy and preventive for various circulatory diseases, easily and preventive for various circulatory diseases, easily and economically, by reacting bicyclo[3,3,0]octenylaldehyde derivative with 3-carboxy-propyl phosphonium halide. CONSTITUTION:The ( 4-carboxy-1-butenyl )-bicyclo[3,3,0]octenylaldehyde derivative of formula III is prepared by reacting the bicyclo[3,3,0]octenylaldehyde derivative of formula I with the 3-carboxypropyl phosphonium halide in the presence of 2-3mol equivalent (based on the compound of formula I ) of a base such as potassium t-butoxide, sodium hydroxide, etc., in a solvent preferably tetrahydrofuran, etc. at -78-+100 deg.C. The obtained product can be converted if necessary to the compound of formula IV by esterification. For example, a methyl ester can be prepared by reacting with diazomethane in an ether solvent.
