PURPOSE:To provide antimicrobial property to semipermeable membrane by treating a semipermeable membrane comprising cellulose ester with organosilicone contg. a quat. ammonium salt group. CONSTITUTION:After forming a semipermeable membrane comprising a cellulose ester such as cellulose acetate an organosilicone contg. a quat. ammonium salt group as expressed by the formula is added to the membrane stirred in the water. (In the formula, R is alkoxy group, halogen atom, or acyl group, one of which may be OH, also; R' is <=20C bivalent hydrocarbon group or <=20C bivalent O- or N-contg. hydrocarbon group, which may have substituents; R'' is lower alkyl; R''' is 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic group; n is a positive integer 1-3; X is an anion. The mixture is heated to perform hot water treatment and organosilicone treatment of the semipermeable membrane simultaneously. The membrane is then dehydrated by centrifuging and then heat-treated. Since the obtd. membrane itself has bactericidal action on microorganisms, propagation of microorganisms on the semipermeable membrane is prevented. When it is used for treatment of an org. raw material liquid, the amt. of bactericide to be added to the liquid can be reduced to the least. Clogging of the membrane due to putrefaction of org. substances on the membrane surface is also prevented. Exchange of treating liquid with water contg. bactericide which has been necessary at a temporary suspending of the membrane separation apparatus has become unnecessary.
