PURPOSE:To vary the pitch between laser beams by using a zoom lens type beam compressor. CONSTITUTION:A beam compressor 11 for variable control over the interbeam pitch consists of a zoom lens 12 and a convex lens 13. Parallel light beam 61, 62... incident to the zoom lens 12 are converged on the optical axis extending to the convex lens 13, and then radiated at necessary interbeam pitch to a necessary beam diameter in parallel from the convex lens 13 arranged so that focal points f12 and f13 of both lenses 12 and 13 are common. The zoom lens moves the principal point of its lens system from 12a to 12a' to vary the pitch and diameter of respective laser light beams 61, 62.... Then, the respective laser beams whose beam pitch is adjusted are projected on the photosensitive material on a recording drum through an image forming lens 14.
