PURPOSE:To obtain a useful chemical material as well as electrical energy by forming a photo-fuel cell with a fuel cell being combined with photo irradiation. CONSTITUTION:A metal plate coated with epilate salt, serving as a positive electrode, a photo-irradiated n-type semiconductor, serving as a negative electrode, and carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, serving as a positive electrode active material, are respectively used. The chemical reaction in a photo-fuel cell having such composition is as follows; carbon monoixide or carbon dioxide are reduced-reacted at the positive electrode, while electrons and holes are produced on the surface of the n-type semiconductor at the negative electrode. The electrons are induced to the positive electrode so as to be consumed by reducing reaction, and holes are removed by reducing agent added to a solution in a negative electrode chamber. On the other hand, reduction of carbon or carbon dioxide existing in a positive electrode chamber is produced by oxidizing reaction of epilate salt. Thus, methanol can be produced with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide being reduced, together with electrical energy being obtained. |
