Metal and glass surfaces are provided with a durable inscription, decoration or design by a sequential printing/microwave process. To this end, the part of the surface which receives the desired inscription, decoration or structure is coated with a microwave-resistant substance by means of a printing form and the remaining blank parts of the surface are subjected to microwave treatment. When the microwave-resistant material is removed, the writing or decoration appears as a high-gloss surface.
