NEW MATERIAL:A substance M-331. Empirical formula; C40H49N9O11S. Molecular weight; 863. Elementary analysis (%); C, 49.12; H, 5.94; N, 13.24. Specific rotatory power [alpha]D<25>=58.9 deg. (dimethyl sulfoxide). Properties; White powdery amphoteric substance. Solubility; Soluble in polar solvents such as water methanol, dimethyl (sulfoxide and dimethylformamide, and sparingly soluble in chloform and ether. Melting point; 204-209 deg.C. pKa (in 66% dimethylformamide); 5.8, 7.9, 10.3 and 11.8. Color reactions; Positive to the Molisch, Folin reactions, etc. USE:Antimicrobial action. Capable of inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, particularly bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas. PREPARATION:A strain (FERM-P No.447) which is a variant of Steptomyces omiyaensis is cultivated at 20-40 deg.C by the spinner culture method with aeration. |
