PURPOSE:To obtain an optically active secondary alcohol useful as an intermediate for PG (prostaglandins) in high yield, by reacting a chain or cyclic ketone with a metal hydride in the presence of an optically active amino acid derivative and an aliphatic or aromatic alcohol. CONSTITUTION:In reducing a ketone shown by the formula I (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, arylkyl, or R<1> and R<2> are may be different each other or may be subjected to ring closure) with a metal hydride, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an optically active amino acid derivative shown by the formula II (R<3> is amino-protecting group; R<4> is carboxyl, or hydroxymethyl; n is 1, 2, or 3; Y is S, O, NH, or COO) and 1-20C aliphatic alcohol or aromatic alcohol (e.g., phenol, or benzyl alcohol). A ratio of the amino acid and the alcohol to the ketone are 2-3mol and 1-2mol based on 1mol ketone.
