In a compressible gasket, such as in particular a cylinder head gasket, made of a compressible non-woven fabric which, if required, is reinforced with metal and impregnated, having coverings and/or full-surface coatings of elastomers or synthetic resin material such as silicone resin, with, if required, the addition of pulverulent to fine-grained substances, the coating material contains thixotropically acting thickening agents such as highly disperse silicic acid or active aluminium silicate hydrates in quantities of 0.1 to 5%, so that the coating materials can be prepared so as to have low viscosity and optimum processability and, upon application, the substances, which become viscous, penetrate only slightly into the compressible material. The coatings and/or coverings can thus be prepared in virtually any desired thickness with good adhesion and low material consumption and any solid fine-grained to pulverulent additives present are firmly bound into the coverings and coatings in a non-colouring manner and with optimum effectiveness.
