PURPOSE:To secure the capacity of an air conditioner as much as possible and protect a frequency converter from overcurrent by a method wherein a revolving number variable type compressor is driven at a revolving number in accordance with a predetermined frequency in which the operating current of the device becomes lower than the maximum allowable current value of the frequency converter, upon the overcurrent of the frequency converter. CONSTITUTION:An output current detecting means 26, detecting the output current of the frequency converter 22, is connected to a microcomputer 21. The microcomputer generates a frequency setting signal so as to change the revolving number of the compressor 3 largely whenever a difference DELTAT between an actual temperature and a set value is large. Further, the microcomputer compares the output current value I of the frequency converter 22 with the maximum allowable electric current value IO based on the signal of the output current detecting means 26 and decides that it is overcurrent in case the output current value I exceeds the maximum allowable current value IO, thereafter, outputs the frequency setting signal to the frequency converter 22 so that the output current value I becomes lower than the maximum allowable current valve IO.
