A method for recovering non-volatile metals from materials in dust containing metal oxides involves blowing the material into the lower portion of a reactor, said reactor containing a solid reducing agent; passing the starting material into a reduction zone within the lower portion, the reduction zone being maintained by the use of a plasma generator adjacent to it; substantially and instantaneously reducing and melting the starting material in the reduction zone and removing the material from the reduction zone; the, removing the melted and reduced metal product from the bottom of the reactor.
