In the method for operating a telephone answering machine, a memory is provided which can record information which can be input by the subscriber and which identifies calling subscribers, such as telephone numbers. Comparison devices are used to ascertain whether the information arriving when a call is made and identifying the subscriber calling at that moment is present in the memory or not. Depending on this and on the operating mode setting of the answering machine, either the answering machine or the call mechanism on the telephone set is activated.
