A salt system having a reduced rate of corrosion comprises a salt selected from the group consisting of KNO3,NaNO3 and mixtures thereof, and a minor amount of a corrosion inhibitor selected from the group consisting of Li2O, Na2O, CuO, Mgo, NiO, CaO, Al2O3, Cr2O3, SiO2, Mn3O4, Ti2O3, Y2O3, Na2CrO4, Na2Cr2O7, K2CrO4, K2Cr2O7, and mixtures thereof.
