Drilling or striking hammer with an electric drive motor which, preferably directly and with the omission of a layshaft, drives a part of the drive shaft leading to the tool holder, which part is widened in a sleeve shape, the entire striking mechanism being arranged in the widened part. The striking mechanism comprises a reciprocating drive piston which has at its cylindrical outer wall a closed, cam-like guide groove in which a guide cam, preferably a driving ball from the rotationally driven sleeve part of the drive shaft, engages. During axially permissible displacement movement of the drive piston, but when locked in terms of rotation, the drive piston derives its translatory stroke movement directly from the torque of the driving electric motor, which torque is passed to the tool holder, and arranged in the interior of the drive piston in a conventional manner is a striking piston which is preferably sprung by means of an air cushion and works on an anvil.
