The invention relates to an electrophoretic indicating device (EPID) which can be operated using transmitted light and/or reflected light. This renders optimum contrast possible in conjunction with good readability. The latter is achieved by means of a dispersion consisting of a colourlessly transparent electrolyte in which carbon-containing pigment particles, preferably of pure carbon are contained finely distributed.
