PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration of a reproduced picture by detecting a read speed at a scanning time of an original read part, deciding skip-read and overlap-read and by storing information. CONSTITUTION:An original reader causes an original read part 3 to start traveling when a travel start command is given, and at the same time the light is irradiated on a platen 1 by exposure lamps 3a and 3b. The reader makes a light- emitting element of a sensor 22 irradiate the light on a position marker 23, and outputs a p8lse signal P from the sensor 22 at a constant interval. The reader decides this signal P by its decision part 4,and when the reader outputs a read permission signal R, the reader stores the information to be read by photoelectric converter 3f in a buffer memory 9b in order. When pulse signals P4 and P5 becomes short in their periods the reader decides them to be skip-read and therefore does not output the read permission signal R corresponding to the signal P5. When a pulse signal P6 is outputted, the reader outputs the signal R4 because the periods of the signals P5 and P6 are restored to the permissible values, thus preventing the slipping off of the reproduced picture.
