PURPOSE:To make partial operation control performable with a simple device, by controlling an engine so as to suspend a specified set of cylinders at a time when a suction air quantity per engine revolution to be found at an engine load calculating device comes less than the reference value. CONSTITUTION:In case of both suction and exhaust valves 33 and 35 of #2 and #3 cylinders B and C in a four-cylinder engine, which are kept in a state of being closed by exciting each solenoid 51 of each valve block device 52 controlled by a control circuit 40 whereby operations of these cylinders B and C are designed so as to be suspendible, the control circuit 40 is constituted so as to control these solenoids 51 on the basis of each output signal out of a cylinder discrimination sensor 11, a crank angle sensor 12 and a throttle sensor 21. And, it judges of whether a suction air quantity per engine revolution is smaller than the preset reference value or not, and when YES is the case, it excites each solenoid 51 and makes operations of these cylinders B and C so as to be suspended.
