When an internal combustion engine has attained an idling speed after starting, an injection rate adjusting element of a fuel injection pump is controlled in order to inject fuel to the assigned cylinders of the internal combustion engine in a number of different ways which are predetermined for compensation purposes. The data assigned for uniform running of the internal combustion engine, such as the torque variations ways of injection which result from the respective, are scanned in order to select that way of injection which permits uniform running of the internal combustion engine. The injection rate adjusting element is then set to the selected way of injection until the internal combustion engine ceases to operate or at least during idling operation.
