NEW MATERIAL:The cyclopentenone derivative of formula I . EXAMPLE:( 1R, 5S )-6, 6-Dimethyl-3-oxa-4(R)[1(R)-4-oxo-5,5-dimethyl-2-cyclopentenyloxy]bicyc lo[3,1,0]hexan-2-one. USE:Useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc. Hydrolysis of the exemplified compound with e.g. dioxane-water mixture gives 4(R)-hydroxy-5,5-dimethyl-2-cyclopentenone which is an intermediate of a prostaglandin derivative. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by condensing 4-hydroxy-5,5-dimethyl-2-cyclopentenone with the lactone of formula II (R is H or lower alkyl) in the presence of an acid catalyst at 20-150 deg.C, preferably 30- 130 deg.C.
