PURPOSE:To use an inexpensive thermoplastic resin as a covering material for a titled fiber by using an extruder wherein the leading end part of a nipple for guiding a glass fiber is placed in a die nozzle. CONSTITUTION:The leading end part 41 of a nipple 4 for guiding a glass fiber 1 for optical communication is placed in a die nozzle 30 from which a thermoplastic resin 2 for covering is extruded. And the thermoplastic resin (composition) 2 which is heated at a temp. higher than the m.p. is allowed to flow downward from a clearance between the inner wall of a die 3 and the outer wall of the nipple 4, and adhered to the surface of the glass fiber 1 guided by the nipple 4. Accordingly, the pressure of the extruded resin 2 is reduced by a viscous flow in the vicinity of the leading end 41 of the nipple, and the backflow of the resin 2 into the nipple 4 can be prevented. And, since the resin 2 and the glass fiber 1 flow in close contact with each other, a closely-adhered covering layer can be obtained.
