PURPOSE:To know easily the reading position of an original during reading by setting an original while the side to be read is directed upward and reading the original by means of a contact type reading sensor moving on the original. CONSTITUTION:The original 37 is placed on an original platen 17 while the side desired to be read is directed upside. Then a transparent original cover 20 is closed and the cover 20 is locked to a case 12 by a cover lock 21. Thus, the original 37 is clipped by a force of a spring 18 between the original platen 17 and the cover 20 and the cover 20 and the side of original desired to be read are brought into closely contact with each other. When the start of reading is indicated by the operation of a panel (not shown) provided to the case 12, a motor 34 is started, which moves a sensor support body 24 along a guide rail 23 together with the contact type reading sensor 26. Thus, the sensor 26 reads the original 37 via the cover 20 from the upper side of the said original 37 while being moved in the subscanning direction.
