Starter cables which must be passed over vehicle parts which move with respect to one another, for example the articulated area of an articulated vehicle, are subject to particular mechanical wear and the risk of a contact of the conductor flex of the starter cable with the vehicle earth is particularly great when the insulation is damaged. Due to a high current load and a lack of spare battery power during starting, fuses cannot be used in the starter circuit. The stressed section of the starter cable is surrounded by a protective conductor which, in turn, is again surrounded by electrical insulation. Thus, the protective conductor is insulated both against contact with the vehicle earth and with the conductor of the starter cable. An electrical monitoring circuit can be used for checking whether a current flow is possible via the protective conductor and an electrical signal device due to damage to the insulation. When the signal device responds, short circuits having severe consequences can be avoided if the starter cable section is immediately replaced.
