In the case of a trunk piston with variable compression level for combustion engines, in which piston parts telescopically arranged inside one another permit a variation in compression level, as a function of the combustion chamber pressure, by variation of the volume of fluid-filled control chambers, a measure is proposed for achieving a control behaviour independent of the engine speed. This consists of reducing the cross-section of a throttle bore (3) provided between a control chamber (4) and a damping chamber (5) as the engine speed increases. <IMAGE>
