Method and device for colour synthesis by the optical mixing of a plurality of colours and variation of the relative intensity of at least one of the colours with the aim of producing a multiplicity of colour tones distributed over the spectral range. Exclusive use is made of the two colours of "red violet" and "green", which are distinguished by a very specific spectral characteristic. The transmission curve for "red violet" has a maximum between 370 and 460 nm and a minimum between 540 and 580 nm. The transmission curve for "green" has a transmission maximum between 520 and 560 nm and a minimum between 640 and 670 nm. The method is particularly suitable for picture composition within a limited picture area, specifically by spatially varying mixture of a plurality of colours and by spatial variation of the relative intensity or saturation of at least one of the two colours.
