PURPOSE:To decrease the deterioration in picture quality due to uneven pitch in the subscanning direction by providing a control means discriminating picture element information adjacent directly or obliquely to a light beam spot irradiated at present and increasing the light beam spot diameter. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal is stored in a shift register 16 storing picture element information of a main scanning line including a light beam during irradiation and shift registers 15, 17 storing picture element information adjacent vertically. A discriminating circuit 18 discriminates whether or not the picture element during radiation and the picture information adjacent thereto are irradiated and ouputs a control signal 19 increasing the light beam spot diameter of the semiconductor laser. A drive circuit 7 of the semiconductor laser increases the light beam spot diameter of the semiconductor laser by using light irradiation information 10B' of the picture element 10B irradiated at present and a control signal 19 to expose a photosensitive body.
