PURPOSE:To produce the titled resin capable of providing a film excellent in pigment dispersibility and painting workability and good in gloss and appearance, by copolymerizing two specified kinds of polymerizable monomers with styrene. CONSTITUTION:A synthetic coating resin of a number-average MW of 1,000- 40,000 is obtained by copolymerizing 5-70pts.wt. polymerizable monomer of formula I (wherein R1 is a 1-20C monoalcohol residue, R2 is a 2-6C polymerizable unsaturation-containing dicarboxylic acid residue, and R3 is a 2-4C alkylene) obtained by an addition reaction between a 2-4C monoepoxide an addition product between a 1-20C monoalcohol and a 1-20C polymerizable unsaturation- containing acid anhydride and/or polymerizable monomer of formula II (wherein R4 is a 2-4C alkylene, and R5 is a 2-20C diol residue) obtained by an addition reaction between a 2-4C monoepoxide and an addition product (molar ratio = 1:1) between a 2-20C diol and a 4-8C polymerizable unsaturation-containing acid anhydride, 10-80pts.wt. styrene and 0-85pts.wt. other copolymerizable monomers, e.g., (meth)acrylonitrile.
