PURPOSE:To process a preprinted part in the same way as that applied to a part printed in dropout colors, by subtracting a reference slip image from an inputted slip image in which a pattern to be read is recorded. CONSTITUTION:By using a slip (reference slip) on which no patterns to be read, such as sharacters, graphic forms, etc., are recoded, information (reference slip image) on the reference slip is stored in a memory 51. The slip image of an inputted slip is taken into the memory 51 in the same way and stored in another memory 52. A subtraction process between the normalizing image (memory 5) of the inputted slip and the thicker image (memory 56) of the reference slip is performed by a control section 2 and the part of the reference slip image contained in the inputted slip is erased and the remaining image is stored in a memory 56. The content of the memory 56 is the characters, symbols, or graphic forms recorded on the inputted slip and a recognition processing section 6 recognizes the content.
