The appliance for cutting off stator windings has a device (13) which can be retracted and extended like a telescope and on whose opposite ends a cutting blade (5) and an opposing stop (6) are fitted. The device (13) can be displaced with respect to a stationary stand part (2, 3), and is supported especially in a sprung manner (20, 21, 24, 25). When the device (13) is being extended, the cutting blade (5) is initially moved forward until it rests on the workpiece. The opposing stop is then extended until it rests on the stator. The cutting blade (5) is then moved forward, being supported via the opposing stop (6), in order to carry out the separating cut. No forces are exerted on the stand parts (2, 3) during the separating cut. <IMAGE>
