Phosphate-free liquid detergents, which in water contain (a) to 10 parts of a polycarboxylic acid in salt form or of a mixture of such polycarboxylic acids, at least (b) 2-40 parts of an anionic surfactant or of a mixture of anionic surfactants and (c) 5-20 parts of a hydrotropic agent or of a mixture of such hydrotropic agents where the concentration of the components (a) + (b) + (c) in water is 10-50 per cent by weight (relative to the total weight of the detergent) and the pH of this solution has been adjusted to 7.0-14. These detergents can contain further components, such as non-ionic surfactants, optical brighteners, alkali metal metasilicate, softeners, enzymes, perfumes, colourants and/or pearlising agents.
