PURPOSE:To prevent generation of defective pictures and to extend the use life of an image carrier by stopping application of a bias voltage to a cleaning brush by a bias voltage applying means when rotation of the cleaning brush and the image carrier is stopped. CONSTITUTION:Electric charge on a photosensitive face 10 of a photosensitive drum 9 which is swept of a remaining toner by a cleaning device is removed by an eraser to prepare for the next copying process. Since the voltage is reduced rapidly in case of the end of the copying operation also, bias power sources 6 and 8 are turned off at the timing opposite to that for rotation start, namely, after rotation of the photosensitive drum 9 is stopped and rotation of a conductive brush 5 and a recovering roll 7 is stopped. In this manner, bias power sources 6 and 8 are turned off after rotation of the photosensitive drum 9, the conductive brush 5, and the recovering roll 7 is stopped. Thus, the excessive current at the instant of turning-off of bias power sources 6 and 8 has no influence upon the photosensitive face of the photosensitive drum 9 and a fur body 11 of the conductive brush 5. Then, the use life of the image carrier is extended, and generation of defective pictures is prevented.
