PURPOSE:To detect the aging level of oil by a method one of a pair of optical fibers extending into oil with the tip thereof facing each other is connected to a light emitting section while the other to a light receiving section and a display is electrically connected to the light receiving section. CONSTITUTION:One 3a of a pair of optical fibers 3a and 3b extending into oil 2 with the tips thereof facing each other is connected to the light emitting section 1 while the other optical fiber 3b is connected to the light receiving section 4 for converting light into an electrical signal transmitted from the light emitting section 1 and a display section 6 for indicating light receiving state of the light receiving section 4 is electrically connected to the light receiving section 4. As dirt develops with the aging of the oil 2, light being transmitted from the first optical fiber 3a is dispersed and absorbed in the oil 2, which reduces the quantity of light reaching the light receiving section 4 via the second optical fiber 3b. As a result, the output from the light receiving section 4 and the display section 6 shows this as decrease in the current value or that in the intensity of lumination at the light receiving section 4 numerically.
