PURPOSE:To provide the titled element capable of forming optical image pattern according to the optical signal scanning from optical signal transmitter using laser oscillator, for use in thermal writing-in system, comprising a liquid crystal composition prepared by dissolving specific azulenium salt compound in liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The objective element comprising a liquid crystal composition prepared by dissolving in liquid crystal an azulenium salt compound of formula I [R1-R7 are each H, halogen or monovalent organic residue; R8 is (substituted) alkyl or (substituted) monovalent organic residue derived from heterocycle; Z<-> is anionic residue] (e.g. a compound of formula II) pref. in such an amount as to form 1-3wt% solution. Said compound will be prepared, for example, by the reaction, in a solvent such as alcohol, between an azulene compound and the corresponding aldehyde compound.
