PURPOSE:To select a peripheral device freely by constituting an adapter as the interface of a peripheral device connected to a programming device. CONSTITUTION:The programming device 1 incorporates a CPU11 which generates input/output addresses of respective control programs while distinguishing adapters, memory 12 in which the programs are written, keyboard 13 for input setting, CRT display device 14, and adapter interface 15; and corresponding peripheral devices 41-45 are connected through various adapters 21-25. The respective adapters 21-25 have a status register, etc. The contents of a register are read out to decides on whic peripheral device is connected to the adapter, and the result is stored in the memory 12. Similarly, a decision is made as to a next adapter and it is judged whether this adapter is the same as the last adapter; when so, its replacement is displayed on a CRT display device 14.
