PURPOSE:To attain retrieval of desired information if only part of index items is recognizable by taking out the first and second characteristic parts and outputting them after turning them into guide pictures. CONSTITUTION:Picture data from a picture input device 1 are cut out by a picture cut-out device 54 and data of partial picture is stored in a picture storage device 2 through a buffer memory 55. When document information to be registered from a code input device 4 is inputted in KANA, a code in response to the KANA is stored in a retrieval information memory 51. When the KANA is inputted by the code input device 4 in order to retrieve registered document information, data in correspondence to the KANA is retrieved by the retrieval information memory 51 and all correspondent stored addresses on data are transmitted to the picture storage device 2. The picture storage device 2 sequentially reads out the picture data based on said addresses to supply the data to a picture display device 3 through a picture synthesizer 58 and a buffer memory 59.
