The system has a plate (4) with projections (3) underneath from which are suspended two friction elements (5) each having a plate (7) attached to the bottom, extending outwards. These are suspended inside a vessel (1) containing one or more vertical friction surfaces (8) which fit between the vertical parts of the friction elements. The vessel contains a damping medium (2) such as oil or a bituminous material. The plates on the friction elements may be symmetrical or non symmetrical. In other designs, they can be held in contact with the friction surfaces by spring force or by a hydraulic or electrical system.
