Conversion of ammonium salts to nitrates in soil can be inhibited by mixing 1,2,4-triazole and/or 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole and/or their salts with HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, (CO2H)2, or PhSO3H, with the fertilizer before use. The triazole is applied at a rate of at least 100 gm/10 are., and can be combined with NH3, (NH4)2SO4, "(NH4)2CO3", (NH4)3PO4, (NH4)2HPO4, NH4NO3, and/or organic nitrogenous fertilizers, e.g. urea, fishmeal, beans, peas, and/or compost., and an inert carrier.
