A valve opening/closing mechanism for a reciprocating prime mover. For allowing the valve opening/closing timing and the lift amount to be varied or for suspending the opening/closing of a suction valve of a cylinder, the apparatus comprises: a cam; a cam follower which is driven by the cam such as to slide within a cylinder (5) between a suction valve and an exhaust valve thereof and which is constantly brought into contact with the cam surface by means of a resilient material; an oiling bore supplying oil into the cylinder (5), the bore being formed in the side surface of the cylinder (5); main and subsidiary discharge bores for adjusting the discharge amount of the oil inside the cylinder (5) by means of valves, the opening of the main and subsidiary discharge bores being formed in the side surface of the cylinder (5); and a hydraulic pressure generator which is communicated with the cylinder (5) and has a hydraulic oil pressure receiving cap which slides, when the hydraulic pressure is generated, to transmit the pressure to the respective upper ends of the suction and exhaust valves. The apparatus is suitably used in a prime mover for a civil engineering vehicle in which the rotational speed is not uniform during the operation of the prime mover or a prime mover for a vehicle for riding, commercial or industrial purposes in which a wide rotational speed range is used and a high torque is required at low speed and a high output at high speed. |
