PURPOSE:To produce methanol, ethanol, etc. by the liquid-phase reaction of CO with H2 by using a catalyst comprising a compound containing mononuclear rhodium carbonyl anion, a sulfonic acid or a sulfonic acid, and an N-containing Lewis base. CONSTITUTION:In the production of an oxygen-containing compound such as methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, etc. from CO and H2, the reaction is carried out using a catalyst composed of ( I ) a compound containing mononuclear rhodium carbonyl anion and (II) a sulfonic acid or a sulfonic acid and an N-containing Lewis base, at 100-250 deg.C and 150-600kg/cm<2>. The component I is e.g. the compound of formula (A is n-valent cation component; n>=1) [e.g. rhodium tetracarbonyl bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium], the sulfonic acid is e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc., and the N-containing Lewis base is e.g. an amine. |
