A method for driving a thermoprinting strip, in which electrical heating pulses are fed to all the printing elements within a predetermined printing time. In order to avoid local overheating of the printing strip and to keep the temporary temperature rise at the printing elements low, the distribution over time of the heating pulses for printing and non-printing printing elements is fixed differently in each case. The printing time is divided up into a fixed number of timing intervals of equal length, of which some are heating phases within which heating occurs and some are cooling phases within which no heating occurs. In the case of non-printing printing elements, in each case heating phases and cooling phases follow one another alternately whilst in the case of printing elements which are printing all the heating phases follow one another and only subsequently all the cooling phases follow one another.
