Cathode for electrolysis of water or an aq., soln. of alkali metal chloride comprises an electrically conducting substrate having, on (part of) its surface a coating produced by spraying a molten mixt. of Ni and/or Co particles with Al particles, and leaching Al out from the surface after coating. Electrolytic cells comprise the electrode and a separator. The cathode exhibits a reduced hydrogen overvoltage together with a long service life. The can can be produced from various types of substrate of desired shapes. The electrode also exhibits low oxygen overvoltage during water electrolysis, where used as anode.
