The invention relates to a method for assembling plates made of marble, granite, glass or other rigid materials which are difficult to machine. According to the invention, the assembly comprises a longitudinal profiled strip (section) 3 placed at the joint of the plates 1 and 2, the said profiled part comprises two recesses 5 and 6 within which the edges of the plates 1 and 2 to be assembled are housed. The said plates 1 and 2 are immobilised by locking means 9 fixed on the said profiled strip (section) 3. The invention will particularly find application for fabricating hollow objects such as window boxes, garden or interior furniture and funeral elements. <IMAGE>
