A locking device for the engine bonnet or boot lid of a motor vehicle consists, in general, of a rotary-latch lock having a locking bolt (13) and of a securing element (1), the so-called catch hook, fastened rotatably to the lock case (3) between two limit positions and having a first sliding track (9). In its first limit position securing the cover against jumping open, with the lock released, the securing element (1) projects essentially beyond the upper case edge (21) of the lock. To prevent the securing element (1) from assuming the first limit position even with the lock locked, this being a disadvantage for the construction of the cover in this region in terms of a shape of low resistance, it is proposed to equip the securing element (1) with a second sliding track (12) for the locking bolt (13), said second sliding track being curved in such a way that, while the cover is being closed, the securing element (1) is rotated in the direction of its second limit position into a position in which its hook-shaped free end (8) is located underneath the upper case edge (21) of the lock, and is held there. <IMAGE>
