An injection moulding machine includes a plasticizing screw 54 of the rotary and axially reciprocating type connected at its rear end to a piston 254 slidable within a cylinder 86 supporting a motor 92 incorporating a drive shaft 210. A splined end 228 of the shaft extends into an axial piston bore 272 and engages a drive spline 276 secured to the piston; the shaft is also splined at 166 to engage the motor drive. Fig. 2 shows the screw and piston in its rearward position after a shot of moulding material has built up in front of the screw which incorporates a one-way valve 68. In this position the motor is automtically switched off, and pressure fluid is fed to passages 140, 142 to force the piston and screw forwardly to effect the injection stroke causing material to pass into a mould 16 carried by a platen 12 connected to the base of the machine by an hydraulic cylinder 30 and ram 32. The injection stroke is limited in its forward direction by the engagement of the piston surface 263 with a stop 296 rearward movement of the piston is controlled by the operation of a switch 45 adjustable along a bar 43 and actuated by a member 51 slidable along a bar 47 and engaged by a cam 290 on the piston. The supply of pressure fluid to the passages 140, 142 causes fluid to flow into the bore 272, and in order to prevent fluid pressure acting on the end 231 of the drive shaft and causing axial forces thereon, conduit means lead from the bore 272 to the face 239 of a flange 232 on the shaft. The area of the face 239 is equated with that of the end 231 to produce a pressure balance. The conduit means includes the splines 227, 280, conduit 278, cavity 265 and conduits 144 and 161. With the motor 92 stopped, the piston may be forced rearwardly by pressure fluid supplied to passages 106, 108. In the modification of Fig. 3, the areas 231 and 239 are interconnected by a conduit 246. In further modifications, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown the flange 232 is located to the left of a bearing 198 and a locknut 218, Fig. 2, to the right.</p>
