ANNULAR SEAL FOR MONOLITHIC CATALYST, AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING SAID SEAL

PURPOSE:To enhance the reliability and durability of a seal, by preparing vermiculite and inorganic short fibers as the main constituents of the seal and forming its materials circularly or elliptically. CONSTITUTION:A slurry 2 comprising 20pts. of ceramic fibers, 65pts. of vermiculite, 5pts. of montmorillonite and 100pts. of water is stored in a slurry tank 1. The slurry 2 is introduced into a main tank 4 by a slurry pump 3. Suction is performed by a dehydrating vacuum pump 5 so that a seal 7 comprising the solid constituents of the slurry 2 is deposited on the surface of a model 6 as the water is filtered through the model. The seal 7 containing the vermiculite and inorganic short fibers as the main constituents is thus formed circularly or elliptically. The thickness of the seal 7 is set at 30-400% of the gap between a monolithic catalyst and a casing.
