In a process for cooling or preheating metal charges 1, which have been subjected to a heat treatment in gas-tight pot furnaces or hood-type furnaces, and which are surrounded by recipient hoods 2, in the interior of which a circulation, inertisation and evacuation of the inert gas atmosphere are possible, and where additionally to the actual annealing furnace, preheating and/or cooling devices are provided, the hot and cold inert gas atmospheres between the interiors 3 of at least two recipient hoods 2 are to be exchanged in a closed circulation. <IMAGE>
