An electromagnetic trip device (20) has a magnetic armature (22), a magnetic core (21), a magnetic yoke (29) and a coil (26). A subregion (51) of the windings of the coil is screened by a material which loses its magnetic properties on heating so that this subregion is switched on only in the event of an excess current in the coil which continues for a relatively long period, but not in the event of a rated or short-circuit current. The non-screened windings are adequate for tripping in the case of a short-circuit current. <IMAGE>
