<p>PURPOSE:To use the whole cell as a mono-domain by giving a temperature gradient to the whole cell, and further expanding an orientation growth range, with regard to the growth of a liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A cell is prepared by enclosing a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 4 into a glass substrate 1 provided with a transparent electrode 2, through a spacer 3 consisting of a directional high polymer film or a metal or an insulator layer having a mechanical directional property, and it is heated so that a ferroelectric liquid crystal becomes an isotropic liquid phase. Subsequently, a temperature gradient is given between A and B of this cell. Both A and B are set to temperatures above the isotropic liquid phase, B is made higher than A, the temperatures of A and B are lowered gradually, or A is set to below a temperature deposited by a liquid crystal phase, B is set to a temperature above the isotropic liquid phase, and B is lowered gradually. Or both A and B are set to above the isotropic liquid phase, A is lowered gradually. By such a method, a liquid crystal phase C is generated on a spacer-liquid crystal boundary, also a liquid crystal layer is grown and oriented by using said phase as a core, and the whole cell can be used as a mono-domain.</p> |
